Game Game Time 1:00 pm ET Tuesday April 7, 2022
The MLB season kicks off with one of professional sports’ oldest rivalries: the Red Sox and the Yankees. It’s been an interesting offseason for both teams as the Yankees stuck with their experienced squad by bringing back Anthony Rizzo, while parting ways with catcher Gary Sanchez who was traded to Minnesota for Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Sanchez was a defensive liability, and both Donaldson and Kiner-Falefa add some great on-base ability to the lineup. Boston improved on the lineup that took them to the ALCS last year, by adding Enrique Hernandez and short stop Trevor Story. Boston did get weaker in the rotation with Chris Sale headed to the 60-day IL and Eduardo Rodriguez signing with the Detroit Tigers.
That means former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi will get the start on Thursday against Gerrit Cole. Obviously whenever Cole gets the ball the Yankees will be a strong favorite in the game. He is one of the most dominant aces in the MLB, and with a rock solid 1-9 batting order now, the Yankees are probably going to be underrated, especially given the upgrades Boston, Toronto, and Tampa Bay made during the offseason. One question mark for Boston is going to be in their bullpen. If the Yankees get to Eovaldi early, can the bullpen come in and hold the fort? The Yankees always have a strong bullpen and can usually count on at least six innings from Cole every start. Call me a square, but I am taking the Yankees on the moneyline to win on opening day, as well as the Over on the runs total.
