It’s always a spectacle when two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani takes the mound, and that is exactly what the fans in Seattle will see on Thursday night. The Angels and Mariners kick off a four-game AL West series with Ohtani going head to head with Seattle’s rookie pitcher George Kirby. In seven starts this season, Kirby has a 1-1 record with a respectable 3.65 ERA and 1.14 WHIP and a very respectable 35:4 strikeout to walk ratio. Kirby got roughed up a bit in his last start against Boston, although two of the five runs he let up were unearned. Meanwhile Ohtani is once again putting up MVP-like numbers boasting a 4-4 record with a 3.64 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP with a 71:13 strikeout to walk ratio.
The Angels have struggled as of late, and it took an Ohtani effort on the mound and at the plate to snap the team’s 14-game losing streak against Boston last week. In this game, I do like the Angels here. Kirby is a respectable arm but I just don’t have any faith in the Seattle offense to put up enough run support against Ohtani. Even though Anthony Rendon might be out after re-aggravating his wrist injury, having Mike Trout back in the lineup is a difference maker. I expect the Angels to be favored with Ohtani pitching, and I am still confident in laying it with the road favorite.
