A stellar matchup for the round of 32 sees the Boilermakers and Longhorns face off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Sunday night. Both teams dispatched of their opening round matchups with relative ease, as Texas knocked out Virginia Tech and Purdue eliminated Yale. The second round will be a tougher matchup for both sides, and while Purdue has a massive offensive advantage over Texas, the Longhorns have one of the best lockdown defenses in the nation. Both teams play at a snail’s pace with Texas ranking 340th in offensive pace and Purdue ranking 271st, which generally leads to an Under score. In terms of offensive efficiency, the Boilermakers have a clear cut advantage, ranking 5th overall in FG%, 4th overall in 3PT FG%, and 32nd in rebounding. In contrast, Texas ranks 160th, 255th, and 249th in those same categories.
Purdue’s true shooting % sits at 3rd in the nation, identical to its offensive efficiency ranking. Texas is an abysmal 154th and 124th respectively. But the real edge Texas has is on defense. The Longhorns have the 17th ranked defense in the nation compared to Purdue’s 218th. Texas gives up an average of ten fewer points per game, and its slow pace has a lot to do with it. Another area where Purdue has struggled all year is at the charity stripe. Purdue is 223rd in free throw %, while Texas is 69th. It would be easy to take the under here, but Purdue’s offense can catch fire at any time. Instead, I’m going to lay the points and take Purdue here to head to the Round of 16. I just don’t think Texas can keep up offensively, even if they can slow down Purdue’s offense.
