This year’s Cinderella team is definitely Saint Peter’s. After knocking off College Basketball royalty in Kentucky, the team also dispatched Purdue, a team that many people had making the Final Four. How are they doing it? They are playing slow and making the other teams try to beat them with what little offensive possessions they have. But the main mismatch again, like I’ve stressed so many times when analyzing college basketball, is the rebounding.
Saint Peter’s beat Purdue despite getting outrebounded 36-20. Like with Miami Florida, it can get you far in the tournament but it likely won’t get you all the way. UNC has the size too with plenty of big men to come off the bench with the likes of Armando Bacot and Brady Manek. UNC can also defend well, and while it can get exposed from beyond the arch, Saint Peter’s likely won’t be able to take advantage of that. When UNC allows nine or fewer three-point field goals, the team is 19-1 on the season.
Saint Peter’s ranks 312th in three-point field goals made, averaging 5.9 per game. The story of Saint Peter’s has been incredible and it’s been one of the best Cinderella runs in recent memory. Unfortunately, I think it comes to an end on Sunday. However, even though I think UNC will win, I am taking the points with the Peacocks. Eight is just too many against a team that has proven itself so far in this tournament.
