There are few teams that have been playing as well as the Celtics in 2022. Boston has gone 8-2 in their last ten games and have won four straight with a sparkling 23-11 record at home. It seems like Boston has finally acclimated to the new system of head coach Ime Udoka. While Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been the primary offensive catalysts the Celtics have the third overall defensive rating in the league anchored by Marcus Smart and breakout center Robert Williams. With a deep bench that was boosted by former Spurs guard Derrick White, the Celtics are climbing the Eastern Conference rankings in a hurry. The Mavericks have been equally as hot going 7-3 in their last ten games, although with a less impressive 17-14 record away from home.
As usual, everything runs through Luka Doncic, even more so now that they traded Kristaps Porzingis at the deadline. But the new additions have paid immediate dividends including backup guard Spencer Dinwiddie, which provides the Dallas second unit with an immediate boost and takes some of the pressure off of Jalen Brunson. Dallas has the fifth best defensive rating in the league and has a solid cast of veteran contributors that are lockdown defenders. It’s an interesting spot for both teams as they both have a marquee matchup next Wednesday against the Warriors and Nets respectively. But both teams know how good the other is, and I don’t think this is a lookahead spot. With two top defensive units going head to head, I’m taking the Under in this matchup on Sunday.
