Wildcard weekend has come and gone, and the favorites had their way this year going 5-1 straight up and 5-1 against the spread. Aside from the Cowboys who lost outright to the 49ers, every home team dominated their matchup. Now, we move onto the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, with some incredible matchups like the Rams and Buccaneers and the Chiefs and Bills. Let’s preview one team from each conference and discuss how likely they are to win the Super Bowl this year.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers You have to start with the reigning champs. Tom Brady and the Bucs didn’t skip a beat against the Eagles, with a dominant 31-15 win. Tampa Bay did so without several key starters including offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs who left the game with an ankle injury, both starting running backs Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones. Obviously Brady was without Antonio Brown and Chris Godwin as well, but none of these absences seemed to matter to the Bucs at all. Their matchup with the Rams is an interesting one. The two teams met once this year when the Rams won 34-24 at home. Los Angeles will provide a much tougher test than the Eagles on both sides of the ball. If Tampa Bay can get past the Rams, the presumed matchup will be with Green Bay at Lambeau Field in what will likely be a legendary matchup for the ages. The worst unit in that game would be the Green Bay defense, and having played in New England for most of his career, the cold weather in Green Bay shouldn’t have much effect on Brady. As of now the Bucs likely have the second best chance to reach the Super Bowl outside of Green Bay. The AFC opponent in the Super Bowl looks like it will come down to the winner of the Chiefs and Bills on Sunday. This would either set up a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl, or an equally intriguing matchup against Buffalo, a team that Brady has dominated over his career, including a 33-27 victory against them this season. In Brady, Tampa Bay has the ultimate ace up their sleeve, but getting a healthy Tristan Wirfs back this weekend will go a long way in determining how far the Bucs get.
