It’s been a tough year for basketball in the state of Oregon. Not only have the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers fallen off the map completely, but both Oregon and Oregon State have had completely lackluster seasons. Oregon State in particular has an abysmal 3-27 record which is a major disappointment following its Cinderella run to the Elite Eight at last year’s tournament. Oregon has a mediocre 18-13 record this year, and has struggled all season long to gain any sort of consistency. The Beavers are mired in a 17-game losing streak while the Ducks have lost three straight themselves. Remember, this is the Pac 12 tournament now and the teams are playing on a neutral floor in Las Vegas.
Does that mean Oregon State has a chance here? Not really. The team ranks at the bottom of the nation in nearly every statistical category including 355th in defensive rating, 347th in rebounding, and 322nd in 3-pt field goal percentage. Oregon won the first matchup handily back in January by the score of 78-56, and we can reasonably expect a similar fate for the Beavers in this game. I don’t think either team is a threat in this tournament, especially against top seed Arizona. It’s likely the end of a nightmare season for Oregon State, although if they are going to get up for any game, it’s going to be against their cross-town rivals. In a game where I don’t expect much from either side, I’ll take the Under in this rivalry matchup.
