If you read our last two picks you went 2-0 in the Sweet Sixteen round as both Houston and Arkansas cashed for us. The Cougars dispatched of Arizona with ease, sending the top-ranked Wildcats home. It doesn’t get any easier for Houston who faces a Villanova team that ended Michigan’’s run with a 63-55 victory on Thursday. Both of these teams play slow, methodical basketball as they rank 316th and 345th in offensive pace respectively. Despite the slow pace, both teams rank amongst the best offenses in the nation and they have two different styles in getting there. Houston loves to grind you down low and is one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Meanwhile VIllanova is a finesse team that will kill you from beyond the arch, and is deadly from the charity stripe.
In fact, Villanova still ranks first in the nation in free throw shooting percentage, a state that becomes more important as the team gets deeper into the tournament. This is going to be a tough game to handicap, but the wildcard may be that Houston’s defense is the best unit on the floor. I don’t think people realize how good this Houston team is. If they were a part of a Power 5 conference, there’s a good change they would have been a one-seed. With Gonzaga, Texas Tech, and Baylor out of the tournament, Houston could have the best overall team left. Villanova should open this line as a small favorite, and I am riding Houston until the end. Sprinkle a small bet on the Houston moneyline as well!
