There are a few narratives running in this game, but perhaps the most important one is how desperately the 49ers need the win. If they win the game, they are in the playoffs, no questions asked. They have already beaten the Rams once this season, but that was at home. The big question this week is who will be starting at quarterback for the 49ers: Trey Lance or Jimmy Garoppolo. So far the veteran has been able to practice in a limited capacity, but a thumb injury to his throwing hand could be difficult to overcome, especially against this Ram’s pass rush that will be in his face all night long. On the flip side, Matthew Stafford has been in one of the worst interception streaks of his career and gave up yet another pick-six touchdown against the Ravens. The 49ers’ secondary is beat up and susceptible to explosive plays which is something the Rams receivers can all take advantage of. I think the handicap here is if the Rams can stop the 49ers power run game. Jalen Ramsay will be on Deebo Samuel but considering the non-traditional ways that Shanahan uses Deebo, this may not have much of an effect. It all comes down to Lance or Garoppolo for me. In my opinion, this spread tells us it's likely expected to be Lance, as if it were Garoppolo I think it would only be a field goal difference. If it’s Lance the variance in the outcome game is multiplied but I still think the 49ers can cover this number. Best bet on Sunday: 49ers +4.5 and on the moneyline.
