Here we go! We have a rematch of the SEC Championship game between long-time rivals the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Both teams won their playoff matchups easily over Michigan and Cincinnati respectively, and now we have a second matchup in as many months between these two college powerhouses. So what’s different this time? Michigan could not take advantage of Georgia’s secondary like Alabama could with quarterback Bryce Young. So how will Georgia react differently this time around? First, Georgia really needs its secondary to step up here. Alabama was able to avoid Georgia’s strong linebacker group by throwing deeper, averaging 16.2 yards per completion. This was nearly double the completion depth that Georgia had allowed all season. Look, Georgia is not going to beat Alabama with their offense, even without wide receiver John Metchie out for the season. Despite its outburst against Michigan, I would not expect the same success against Alabama which stifled Cincinnati and smothered Georgia once already back in December. The fact is, it is a massive quarterback mismatch between Young and Stetson Bennett. As good as Bennett looked in the pocket, Alabama has the defensive line to make him feel just uncomfortable enough to rush his passes. You’re going to give me a field goal with Nick Saban in the College Football Championship game? Give me the +2 with Alabama, the best team in the country once again.
